2018 NHL Awards
Tonight is the NHL Awards and the excitement just isn't there. But even if no one cares I'm still going to give my picks for the awards even though I will still get them wrong.
So let's start with the locks meaning the awards that were already won:
Art Ross: Connor McDavid
Rocket Richard: Alexander Ovechkin
William Jennings: Jonathan Quick
These awards are given out for really no reason because we know that they won as soon as the regular season ended. Now let's move on to the awards that are actually a choice.
Vezina Trophy: Pekka Rinne
It's his award to lose just in the fact his regular season was so good and the Predators won the presidents trophy even though I doubt he is the best goalie on their team now this regular season award should be his.
Frank J. Selke: Sean Couturier
I just wanted to be different here this award has been a revolving door of Bergeron, Toews, and Kopitar so let's get Couturier this award even though it will probably be Kopitar because he is also nominated later
Norris Trophy: Victor Hedman
This one brings me a lot of joy because I've been waiting for Hedman to win since before he came to the NHL. Watching him grow and develop into the star has been amazing. Now he gets his validation as one of the best defenders in the league.
Lady Byng: William Karlsson
Bringing respect to Vegas' amazing inaugural starts with William Karlsson. The Columbus Blue Jackets reject went to Vegas and absolutely lit it up and now I give him this award to cap off this season.
Bill Masterton: Brian Boyle
All these players deserve this award but I'm giving to Boyle for coming back from cancer and still managed to have a successful season.
Calder: Mathew Barzal
Throughout the season there was always a clear-cut winner of this award. It started with Clayton Keller for the first couple months then Brock Boeser took over until he got hurt and Barzal just ran away with the award.
Leadership Award: Deryk Engelland
Another trophy for one of Vegas' first players selected. After the tragedy before the season and the way Engelland led the team as the most likely captain leads to this award.
Jack Adams: Gerard Gallant
This was a tough one because of Jared Bednar leading the Avalanche from one of the worst seasons back to the playoffs but Vegas didn't exist last year and Gerard Gallant led this team to a division title and more after the regular season.
King Clancy: Henrik and Daniel Sedin
This seems like the perfect sendoff for the Sedin twins. Two great men that have done so much for the game on and off the ice as much as I love Subban and Zucker and everything they've done this our final salute to the twins
GM of the year: George McPhee
The last time we salute the amazing Vegas season is by acknowledging the way McPhee finessed the entire NHL to build a team of misfits into a division champion and Stanley Cup runner-up in their first season.
Ted Lindsay Award: Taylor Hall
I'll give Hall his credit for helping a team with the #1 pick last year even though they didn't finish last but they still made the playoffs and without the performance of Hall they most likely would have been in a similar position back to back years
And finally...
Hart Memorial Trophy: Nathan MacKinnon
I couldn't give MacKinnon's coach his award but the validation for the incredible season the Avalanche had is now on full display with their best player taking home the most valuable player award.
Let's hope I don't embaress myself with these picks.
